Microphlebectomy

Los Angeles Provider of Microphlebectomy Surgery for Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can cause an enormous amount of misery to sufferers. A common condition that affects around half of all individuals over the age of fifty, or around a quarter of all adults, varicose vein symptoms can range from simply looking unsightly through to causing significant discomfort and distress. As people age, the venous valves that help prevent blood pooling in the extremities start to weaken, meaning blood doesn’t flow back to the heart as quickly or efficiently as it should. Over time, repeated blood pooling can lead to veins becoming swollen, causing the unpleasant raised ridges that sufferers exhibit. Not only do varicose veins look unpleasant, they can also throb, ache and cause considerable discomfort, limiting daily activities and making a good night’s sleep difficult to achieve. In these circumstances, a microphlebectomy for varicose veins (also known as an ambulatory phlebectomy) can be a successful solution for veins in the leg or groin.

What Is an Ambulatory Phlebectomy Treatment?

During an ambulatory phlebectomy, the troublesome vein is removed through a small incision (typically around 0.25” or less). The intervention permanently removes the troublesome vein, bringing immediate relief. Usually removal has no effect on circulatory efficiency, with other veins carrying the blood back to the heart. Prior to surgery, an ultrasound exam establishes that there is an intact deep venous system and that the arterial system is working well. If there are problems with these, those will need to be rectified before an ambulatory phlebectomy is carried out. The procedure is undertaken under local anesthetic and normally takes less than an hour. Patients can walk in and walk out after surgery. Stitches aren’t usually required, with a plaster strip normally being sufficient to close the incision successfully. After surgery, patients will be required to wear a supportive bandage for a day or so. Some patients prefer to wear the bandage, or a compression stocking, for a few days longer.

Is Ambulatory Phlebectomy for Varicose Veins Safe?

Generally, the surgery is very well-tolerated and suitable for a wide range of people. We take the safety of our patients extremely seriously and do everything we can to ensure a safe outcome to their treatment. Prior to any treatment being undertaken, every patient receives a thorough examination and assessment to ensure that there aren’t any contraindications to the procedure. The ultrasound exam that’s performed provides additional information on the integrity of the circulatory system, minimizing the risk of serious deficiencies being missed. The use of local anesthetic removes the risks associated with general anesthesia. Because the procedure is “walk in, walk out”, the likelihood of post-procedural complications such as DVT are minimized. We do everything we can to make the procedure as safe as possible. If you have any concerns at all, our team will be happy to discuss them with you.

The Benefits of Ambulatory Phlebectomy for Vein Removal at Our Los Angeles Clinic

The following are key advantages of opting for an ambulatory phlebectomy:

  • Rapid results! Many patients notice that the appearance of their leg has improved as soon as surgery is complete.
  • Quick procedure – most patients are in and out of the clinic in less than an hour.
  • Few post-procedural restrictions. Aside from the need to wear a supportive bandage, there are few other restrictions on activity following the procedure.
  • Minimally invasive – the use of a local anesthetic and the tiny size of the incision mean that there are fewer risks in comparison with a more invasive procedure.

Side Effects of Microphlebectomy Treatment for Varicose Veins

Like any other treatment for varicose veins, microphlebectomy can have a number of different side effects. Although generally a safe procedure, almost all patients will see some bruising on their leg once the vein has been removed. This usually resolves within a few days without the need for further intervention and isn’t usually a cause for concern. Some patients may find that the skin around the surgery site feels strange, due to temporary neurological damage. Symptoms may include tingling, numbness or burning. Usually these issues are easily managed and resolve quickly. In a few cases, further intervention may be required. Another side effect can be temporary discoloration of the skin, due to the body producing more melanin. Like most of the other side effects, this problem tends to resolve in a few weeks or months. Rarely, patients may have an allergic reaction to the anesthetic, get an infection from the incision or experience significant discomfort. If you experience any problems or have concerns following your microphlebectomy our team will always be happy to help.
